Here in Texas we have two different types of termites. The most common of the two is the subterranean termite. The second termite found in our area is the drywood termite.
Subterranean termites are typically found in the soil and love moisture rich places like leaky roofs, defective plumbing areas, leaking air conditioner condensers, and filthy gutters. Drywood termites are the termites that you mostly find in your home. They can be found living in your furniture and infesting the walls of your home.
Whichever type of termite you have, it can be disastrous for your home. Termites are often referred to as the silent destroyer. Termites cause billions of dollars in damages to homes every year. That equates to thousands of dollars per home.
Subterranean termites can claim the award for causing the most destruction of wood in the entire United States. Moreover, they create tunnels underground, making it hard to detect when you have a termite infestation.
Even though termites are terrors to our homes, they are extremely beneficial to the environment. Termites will breakdown cellulose into nutrients that the soil can easily use. This allows the soil to stay healthy and is extremely important to our ecosystem.
The problem with termites occurs when they decide to take up residence in our man made homes, sheds, shops, decks, warehouses and so on. No matter what your home is made up of, termites will find the cellulose based products used in the construction of your home.
When termites reside in the wood we use for our various purposes they destroy it from the inside out. They hide their activity behind shingles, siding, wood trim, and wallboards. You may also find termites in your furniture, shelving, and scarily enough, sometimes in your cherished books.
Left unchecked, termites can become a big problem. The easiest way to save money, and have cheap termite treatment is to prevent them from ever taking hold on your home with preventative termite treatment. We want to provide you with long lasting protection, and to help you avoid costly damages caused by termites.
There are three types of termites in the caste system of termite colonies.
The first are the reproductive termites. These termites can be winged or wingless and they are the termites that produce eggs and keep the termite population growing.
The second are the soldier termites. They provide protection of the colony against other termites and ants. Soldier termites do not forage for food and rely on the worker termite to feed and care for them.
This brings us to the third type of termite, the worker termite. These are the termites that cause the damage to our homes, buildings, decks, and sheds.
The worker termite makes up the majority of the termites found in a colony and they do all of the hard work for the rest of the termites. Worker termites are white in color, wingless, and range from ¼ inch to 3/8 inch long. They provide the food for the reproductive termites and the soldier termites. They are also responsible for building the underground tunnels and shelter tubes. Lastly, they groom their queen and keep her comfy.
Our outside inspection will include looking for any damage to your homes foundation, like cracks or leaks. We will also look to see if there are any spots around your foundation where the soil level is above the foundation or covering weep holes. Termites love to build their colonies in such areas.
The window frames and doorframes of your home will be inspected for any damaged wood caused by termites. We will take a look at the roof of your home and the gutters to determine if there is any damage there or leakage coming from there.
Our professionals will also check any dense foliage or shrubbery that is located close to your home. We will inspect high termite traffic areas like porches and sheds for any signs of activity. Our inside inspection will begin with a thorough look at the plumbing in your restrooms and the kitchen. Termites love these moisture rich areas of your home.
Next we will inspect the baseboards surrounding the home and any hardwoods located in the home. Paying special attention to any cracks or splitting located in the flooring.
We will survey the walls and ceilings, looking for any discolorations that may suggest water damage that attracts termites. If your house is on pier and beam we will inspect the crawl space for any signs of infestation.
After our thorough inspection we will give you an action plan. We will first tell you how we plan to rid you of your termite infestation and then give you a comprehensive plan on how to prevent termites in the future.
If you have a subterranean termite problem there are a few different options we have to get rid of them. You can choose between chemical treatment, foam treatment, baiting treatment, or a combination of the three. If you have an infestation of drywood termites then you can decide between spot treatment and fumigation.
We highly recommend using a professional exterminator to rid you of your termite problems. Do it yourself treatment can hurt you, your family, and your pets if used incorrectly or improperly.
